A Firm Foundation

Last week my pastor preached from Matthew 7 on the Wise & Foolish Builders. I couldn't help but think about this parable when Hurricane Eta blew past Central America. Honduras and eastern Guatemala were hit the hardest and that included my beloved Puerto Barrios. The rain was so fierce and constant that several areas were flooded and mudslides took out many homes. These meager structures had no chance against the storm, and families lost everything they owned.
My heart aches for the people. After a year of COVID, government shutdowns, and a deteriorating economy, this was an especially hard blow. I saw this photo of the boat Elizabeth and I thought, Yes! If only I could be there to help! I'm encouraged to see the people rallying together, churches providing shelters, and even the government meeting basic needs. They will rebuild from this catastrophe. But they still need Jesus because more storms will come.
You see, the parable is not about the house we live in. It's about making Jesus our firm foundation. It's about following Him and trusting Him alone when the storms of life hit. My prayer is that the Guatemalans not only recover physically, but they they have HOPE in life eternal with Jesus. May He alone be their firm foundation now and forevermore.
Matthew 7:24
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
